Position Description:
As part of the Material Flow Engineering Design team, the Sr. System Layout Designer will be responsible for creating AutoCAD layouts for automated material handling system. The system layout designer will work closely with the system design engineers, participate in concept discussions to understand the design requirements and the equipment and components being considered for a solution. Through multiple layout iterations the system layout designer supports the design process with more detailed information about space requirements, equipment limitations, and 3D visualization of the concept. Tesla is looking for an individual that is a self-starter who can work independently and provides a level of creative and innovative thinking that is essential to the system design process. This position will be based in Fremont, California at the Tesla Model SX and 3 manufacturing location and will report to the System Design Manager of the Material Flow Engineering team.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Develop AutoCAD/3D layouts for automated material handling solutions that support Tesla's goal of creating highly automated manufacturing facilities.
Prepare layouts, designs and estimates from general instruction and/or preliminary sketches, diagrams or schematics
Provide inputs about the characteristics and limitations of common material handling technologies such as conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems, automated guided vehicles, robotics, etc.
Recommends modifications and changes for design improvement and simplification
Review and iterate quickly on concept layouts
Prepare 3D views to visualize concepts and support presentations to a larger audience
Support the data analysis that is required to establish system design criteria
Provide inputs to simulate and prove the validity of the drawn concept
Qualifications/Skills
Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Mechanical, or similar
Proficient in the latest AutoCAD/SolidWorks/Catia versions
6-10 years of experience in manufacturing, distribution and logistics experience desirable.
In depth knowledge of the layout requirements for material handling technologies such as conveyor systems, automated storage and retrieval systems (crane and shuttle based systems), robotics, automated guided vehicles, mobile robots, etc.
Produces complex technical drawings. Prepares working drawings from conceptual layout to detailed finished product
Provides advanced drafting and design services by preparing and maintaining blueprints, facilities layouts and engineering or project drawings
Experience with material flow strategies, material handling and dynamic manufacturing systems
Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to manage multiple ambiguous projects at the same time with a moderate degree of variation and uncertainty.
Natural ability to speak, write and communicate effectively at all organizational levels
Ability to perform well and grow under limited supervision
