__________________________________________________________________________________ Fleet Supervisor Class Specification This Class Specification is currently under review.
Definition Under general direction, supervises and participates in the work of Fleet Maintenance employees engaged in the maintenance, repair and servicing of light and heavy automotive, diesel, and other mechanical equipment of the City; performs maintenance work of considerable difficulty.
Class Characteristics This is the first level, working supervisor classification in the Fleet series.
Incumbents are assigned to supervise and may be required to perform high-level work.
This class has responsibility for the day to day supervision of the preventative maintenance and repair program for the City vehicles and equipment.
Assignments, objectives, and work methods are explained in general terms.
Work methodology is the responsibility of the employee within established policies, rules and/or regulations and is reviewed periodically to assure conformance and measure results.
The Fleet Supervisor is distinguished from the next higher level classification of Fleet Maintenance Manager by the latter's responsibility to plan, organize, and manage and administer the vehicle replacement program.
Essential Functions Plans, organizes, coordinates, administers and directs the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of automobiles, and mechanical equipment of the City.
Participates in the recruitment, examination, and staff hiring process.
Evaluates assigned staff.
Resolves a variety of routine personnel and administrative matters including disciplinary actions of assigned staff.
Provides technical training to crews.
Conducts safety meetings Reviews and provides solutions to technical issues and problems.
Determines where improvements can be made and recommends and implements changes.
Keeps records and makes periodic or special reports on work performance including personnel records, accident reports, , backlog reports and maintenance records and requisitions.
Monitors work for adherence to professional and mandated standards.
Responds to inquiries from the general public and City staff.
Determines time, materials, supplies and overall costs needed to complete assignments and provide input into the budget process.
Ensures that safe and efficient work practices and procedures are followed, including those pertaining to the set up of work sites, the use of equipment, the maintenance and storage of equipment, materials and tools, and the use of personal protective clothing and equipment.
Coordinates work within the City and with other agencies.
Attends departmental and interdepartmental/agency meetings.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in Fleet Maintenance; Fleet materials and their characteristics; practices and principles of supervision and training; work scheduling; safe work practices; equipment and materials estimating and ordering.
Skill in:
Using hand and power tools used in equipment repair; adjusting and maintaining equipment; using proper lifting techniques.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, direct, and participate in the activities of one or more crews assigned to work area in Fleet; supervise staff; participate in the hiring process; conduct performance evaluations; recommend, sign, and implement discipline; train subordinates; prioritize and schedule assigned work; sketch designs and present notes to coworkers and supervisors; operate personal computers; contract projects for compliance with specifications, standards, codes, ordinances and regulations; estimate labor and materials and prepare written and verbal reports; evaluate a problem or situation and arrive at a logical decision; work independently; work under pressure; identify and correct safety hazards; lift and carry objects safely; climb ladders to various heights; use a variety of hand and power tools safely and efficiently; design and fabricate special tools, devices, and replacement parts; develop and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; perform heavy physical labor; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; perform routine maintenance on equipment; resolve disputes; and learn and apply City rules, regulations, processes, and procedures.
Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.
Education/Experience Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to completion of high school and six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of building systems and components, including two (2) years of lead experience in any Fleet trade.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements Possession of or ability to obtain by time of appointment, a valid Class C California Driver License is required.
Failure to maintain this license will result in discipline up to and including termination.
